The Medical Complexity chapter equips professionals with knowledge and skills to manage the unique challenges faced by children with complex health needs. Starting with foundational concepts, the curriculum addresses spasticity, spinal cord injury, feeding tubes, tracheostomy, and mental health considerations in this population. Later sections delve into advanced care strategies, including mobility, communication technologies, and palliative support, offering a comprehensive resource for healthcare providers dedicated to this specialized area of pediatric care. 

The Medical Complexity Chapter spans 19 topics across five levels of instruction. Levels 1 and 2 provide foundational knowledge beneficial for medical professionals and allied professionals, including educators, social workers, therapists, and psychologists.

Levels 3 to 5 shift to a more clinical focus, offering advanced insights geared toward medical doctors and sub-specialists.

Michelle Melicosta, MD, MPH joined Kennedy Krieger Institute in 2014 as a board-certified pediatrician and pediatric hospitalist in the Pediatric Rehabilitation UnitLinks to an external site. at Kennedy Krieger Institute. She currently serves as the Medical Director of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. She is an assistant professor in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  Dr. Melicosta provides comprehensive, pediatric neurorehabilitative care as part of the interdisciplinary care team for to infants, children and teens on the inpatient unit at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Her clinical interests include spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, pediatric pain rehabilitation and post-orthopedic surgery rehabilitation.

 

Nadia Zaim, MD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her expertise is centered around Child Psychiatry and Pediatrics.
